Hood River New School students (and friends) win at Washington State Destination Imagination Tournament
Big congratulations to two New School students, their two siblings, and a Trout Lake student for collaborating on a very creative and successful Destination Imagination team! Rye Jones-Hyde, Fisher Jones-Hyde, Bridger Gilchrist, Lark Gilchrist, and Anders Daly competed in the Fine Arts Challenge (Tricky Tales), Middle Level at the Washington State Tournament. Their play impressed the judges with the set's wilting flowers, a lightning illusion, and a hands-free costume transformation involving a chemical reaction. Their challenge solution received 1st place and they were also awarded the DaVinci prize for demonstrating "exceptional creativity by taking huge risks. The multiple technical methods used during the performance demonstrated their ability to think outside the box." Big congratulations to the team for their creativity and hard work. Destination Imagination is an organization committed to giving students the opportunities to learn teamwork and leadership skills through STEAM projects and programs.
Judges notes on their DaVinci Award:
Synopsis: This team pulled off a costume transformation with baking soda and vinegar that changed the color of the fabric before our eyes
We believe this team displayed exceptional creativity by taking huge risks. The multiple technical methods used during the performance demonstrated their ability to think outside the box. Even when the costume transformation misfired, they continued undaunted with the performance. The baking soda/vinegar effect, triggered by magnetic release, poured liquid down the costume, changing the fabric before our eyes. Also impressive was the flowers wilting, the lightning strike, and the lighted mountains.
DaVinci Award General Criteria:
The paths we follow on our journeys were once uncharted and unknown – until someone took a bold step in a new direction and paved a way for us to follow. To solve our Challenges, imagination, creativity, originality, and courage are required. We honor those individuals and teams who most clearly demonstrate that spirit of adventurous risk in their solutions – those who most creatively traveled to reach truly new and unique destinations. The DaVinci Award is named to honor one of humanity’s greatest creative thinkers, Leonardo Da Vinci. Awards will include an inscription of Leonardo’s personal motto “Sapere Vedere” (To Know How to See ) – fusing classical thought and philosophy with art and science to propose new and creative outlooks of the world.
