“I've worked in a number of different schools, and I’ve found joy in working with students at each one. However, this school is, hands down, the best teaching environment I've ever worked in.
One of the biggest advantages for me is the supportive atmosphere for teacher development. Here, I’m not siloed in my classroom; I have 4-5 hours of prep each week where I sit down and plan and reflect with my teaching partners, including our literacy specialist and other members of the support crew. As a core teacher, I also teach some of the lessons together with the other teacher, which allows me to see how a different teacher approaches the material.
The variety built into our schedule makes each week engaging and meaningful. With a four-day academic week, we build in so many opportunities to play outdoors, volunteer, and interact with students in settings outside the classroom. I get to see my students in so many different environments that I have a very deep sense of who they are and what drives them.
Most importantly, the efficacy of our model—working with the same students for three years in small classes—allows me to truly understand their unique needs, strengths, and capacities. I can push them to be their individual best because I have the time to develop deep knowledge of how they learn and what they need to succeed.
Ultimately, this job allows me to be an integral part of a positive learning community, and that's an incredibly rewarding experience.”
